One of the organizations that challenged the government formal laws was the Student Nonviolent Coordinating committee (SNCC). It was formed in 1960 by black college students dedicated to overturn segregation. They organized a "sit-in" movement. This technique became prominent after February 1, 1960, when four black men were refused service at a segregated lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina.
