Segregation was a very controversial topic among both blacks and whites. There was segregation in school, transportation, and voting. Segregation affected blacks in many ways. Many blacks couldn't walk into a restaurant without refusal of services. Although the civil war brought about freedom of slaves in the 1860's, blacks still found themselves under under radical oppression a century later. One of the organizations that challenged the government formal laws was the Student Nonviolent Coordinating committee (SNCC). It was formed in 1960 by black college students dedicated to overturn segregation. They organized a "sit-in" movement. This technique became prominent after February 1, 1960, when four black men were refused service at a segregated lunch counter in Greensboro, North Carolina.
