Greed is used in Treasure Island as motivation or inspiration to Jim Hawkins, Squire Trelawney, Dr. Livesey, Ben Gunn, Long John Silver and his crew to uncover the treasure. One of the first times greed is brought out in the novel is when Jim takes the map from Billy Bones’ room. Greed can be seen as the spark to give the characters something to strive for. Without greed, the treasure wouldn’t have been uncovered.
