Jonathan Swift is very sardonic in his essay, A Modest Proposal. The essay starts off addressing the serious problem of the hunger crisis in the poverty of Ireland. This act of hurting the ‘lawmakers’ raises the bar of sarcasm to “sarcasm plus” or sardonicism . Also the fact that this paper attacks the whole congressional institution, not just the individuals in it, adds to the sardonic tone. This essay has many surprises such as when Swift’s ability to disguise his insults in the form of sardonicism in the later paragraphs.
