In the 15th and 16th centuries, the exploration of the African coast by Europeans, especially the Portuguese, brought about great change. Exploration paved the way towards changes in society and economics of both Africa and Europe. The greatest change however was that of slavery. There was an emergence of a “new slavery,” a type a slavery not seen since the time of the Romans.

of Africa brought about great change to the people of Europe and Africa. The slave trade ruined African society and decimated the population but at the same time improved the economy of Europe. Slaves were dehumanized and made into the possessions of wealthy Europeans. They were valued for their work but nothing else. The “new slavery” was a drastic change from the traditional slavery that had been seen around the world before the 15th century.
