In the poem there is an anonymous character that has caught an unmistakably old, “battered and venerable and homely” fish that has apparently given up on life. The poem takes place on a body of water in a “little rented boat.” The speaker initially responds to the situation when he holds the fish beside the boat half out of the water, with his hook in the corner of its mouth.
