Sir Sandford Fleming was born on January 7 , 1827 in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. At the age of only 14 Sandford Fleming was a student learning the trade of engineering and surveying from John Sang. “On April 24, 1845 Sandford Fleming at only the age of 17 years” immigrated into Upper Canada with his brother and cousin. With little training in surveying and engineering, Fleming came to Canada, and became the chief engineer of the Northern Railway. As chief he came up with the idea to build the railway to the Pacific. He also gave many other contributions to Canada like the first adhesive postage stamp, the 24 equal time zones, and other smaller projects. We should remember Fleming for the many gifts he gave to Canada.
