In conclusion, Nathaniel Hawthorne depicts the characters in The Scarlet Letter as prototypes. The main characters of Hawthornes novel are not Hester, Chillingworth, Dimesdale, and Pearl, but instead passion, vengeance, cowardice, and perceptiveness. Hawthorne uses the human characters mearly as mediums for the traits he wishes to have interact with one another.
