They originally were not allowed in the colony because the governor, Peter Stuyvesant was anti-Semitic and also did not want people with no money coming into the colony. The New Amsterdam colonists were very kind to them, however, and tried to help them out. This was shown in my book when they bought the items that the Jews needed to sell to repay debt, and then gave them back the items. ¤
