In 1800, despite what Luigi Galvani had hypothesised, electricity could be conducted without the presence of animal tissue. Alessandro Volta, determined to prove his hypothesis correct, and after experimenting for several years, invented the first battery. It was constructed of a consecutive stack of metals: silver and zinc, placed in contact with moist cloth soaked in a salt solution.
