their militaristic way of life. The main policies which dominate Sparta
between the years 478 and 404BC are those of anti-Athens and anti-
Helots. Therefore I believe that Spartan policy was not always governed
by the necessity of taking precautions against the Helots but was one of
the main Spartan policies throughout this time period.
