Latin America in the nineteenth century was a time that was not well documented for the lower class. In fact, the only references to the culture of the lower class or "folk" were from oral history, poems, elite writings about the folk society, and from secondary sources. However, today people still observe many traditional Indian customs such as dress and language. The folk's resistance against "progress" in Latin America was very prevalent in the nineteenth century and although there are not many primary sources as to the actual events, Burns represents the folk culture and struggle well in his historical analysis.
