In 1849 alone, 25,000 Americans had come to California by sea from the East. Another 55,000+ crossed America by land. Much smaller numbers of Mexicans, South Americans, and Europeans joined “the rush” as well. This had a profound effect on California, as within the next 2 years, nearly 200.000 people (most of which were men) had come to the new territory.
