In desperation and with a strength showing their incredible will to survive, Shackleton and two of his companions climbed over this unknown terrain, interspersed with high rugged mountains and glaciers. After only 36 hours of near continuous climbing, they reached the whaling station of Stromness, having narrowly evaded death on many occasions. All members of the expedition were saved in the rescue operation that followed.
