How could a man with such “powerful knuckles and veins engorged by the pressure on the arm,”(197) have pink varnish on his fingernails? She begins to pick this hand apart and examine its every detail. I believe the young bride might be worrying about her husband having been recently widowed and is looking at the hand in this light, wondering if this hand could have done some evil.
