In “The Crisis, No. 1,” Thomas Paine uses metaphors to persuade the American public to continue supporting the Revolutionary war. After examining examples of the two different metaphorical intents used in “The Crisis, No.1,” the roles each play in persuading the reader to support the Revolution are clearly evident. Paine’s metaphors appeal to both the reader’s intellect and emotions. This is his style that engraved his beliefs on paper, and ultimately left an indelible imprint for all of posterity.
