The United States is facing a huge problem concerning the nation’s penitentiaries. Prison guards and politicians are concerned about the problems in jails; however the saddest thing is that our citizens are aware of the situation but don’t do anything about it. The populace seems to accept the problem; assuming that prisoners lose their rights once they are incarcerated. What is the problem in our prisons? The answer seems to be the violation

health system so that people can be helped before they become part of the prison system. Services like medication therapy and monitoring, residential services, rehabilitation services, and support services are successful in bringing the severely mentally ill back to communities. People go to jail because the society wants to punish them, but the punishments of prison rape seem manifestly at odds with commonly accepted standards of justice (Hell Behind Bars 24). We must change that philosophy.
