I believe the theme to this book is that war sucks. Even if you were a soldier and managed to survive, in some way, shape, or form you were destroyed by it.
The significance of the title is the time that Paul Baumer, a child of war, was killed. He died on one of the quietest days on the western front. A couple of weeks before the war ended.
