With the many ambiguities throughout the poem, and the dream-like setting Coleridge has implemented, it is difficult for us to distinguish which incidents actually occurred and which have been dreamed. In consideration of all the elements combined we can conclude that the character of Geraldine was meant to be ambiguous, used as a tool to attain the character of genius, and as a way of evoking a ”sense of wonder”(Perkins, 565).
